One of the problems many people have who are just discovering their Dressing Your Truth type or personal style is what to wear now that so many of the clothes key pieces for a capsule wardrobe. Who has enough budget to makeover their entire closet? I didn’t, though I admit that I did do some shopping. I got to thinking about how to make it easier for people to make changes in their wardrobes without breaking the bank…
Create a Key Pieces for a Capsule Wardrobe
As you look at your color card, you might choose two or three new colors to play with that you know will mix and match well together and as your budget allows, create a small core wardrobe with these colors. Once you are used to that core wardrobe, if you want, try a new group of new Vintage Style Clothing
Maybe 6-8 Items
In my head, I was thinking maybe six-eight items: one pair of pants in a neutral color, a skirt and a jacket in that same neutral color, two shirts in two different colors and possibly a scarf or other accessory combining those colors.
Once I had that idea, I was playing around with the idea of writing yet another article, with low-budget ideas (6 items), a plan for a medium budget which would add another pair of pants, another skirt, a dress and a cardigan (ten pieces is a fairly common recommendation), and then, a plan for those who want a core key pieces for a capsule wardrobe but have an unlimited budget. Since I have never had that kind of budget, that’s as far as I got.
Six Or Less
And then, I heard about a movement that began in June. It just has another run in January (2011), with people choosing six items in their closet and agreeing to wear only those six pieces for a month. Hmm.
My initial question, when I heard about it, was “could I do that?” I never intended to limit myself to six items! But could I? Six pieces that all represent my energy type, which is a type 2.
What’s so cool about this idea is that the Dressing Your Truth system advocates giving yourself 30 days to try dressing according to type to really know how it feels before deciding for sure that you do or do not like or fit your type. Before judging it or refusing to honor your truth.
Try it out and see for 30 days.
So I loved the idea of putting my theory to the test, that it would be fairly easy to create an inexpensive core wardrobe containing pieces that all fit your type with just six items.
Let’s Take the Challenge
I took the challenge and blogged about my experience, the good, the bad and the ugly. And I am so grateful for that experience. Once you have identified your type, try it for yourself!
Here are the terms of the challenge…
“Each participant gets to choose six (and only six) items of clothing and pledge to wear only these six items of clothing for a month key pieces for a capsule wardrobe. They’ll share their experiences here at . There are exceptions that don’t count towards the six: undergarments, swim wear, work-out clothes, work uniforms, outer jackets (rain slicker, outdoor jacket), shoes and accessories. You can get multiples of the same item for laundry purposes, but different colors count as separate items. Or you can tell us to stuff it and make your own rules.”
